Norwood Henry (“Woody”) Thomas
SYMPATHY FOR GLADYS USSERY CLASS OF 1960
Norwood Henry (“Woody”) Thomas, Senior, age 89 of Seguin passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023. Norwood was born on July 14, 1933, in Gonzales County, Texas to Ophelia (Wright) and Julius Thomas, Senior. Norwood, his parents, and 11 brothers and sisters moved to Seguin when he was 8.
At the age of 16, Norwood, known by his nickname “Woody”, would begin a career in the scrap metal business that would span nearly half a century. Starting with employment at Schroeder Scrap Yard in Seguin, where he would swing a sledgehammer at scrap autos, he would develop an unsurpassed work ethic that would guide him in life. Following 3 years at Schroeder, and 11 years working for Kaiser Automotive cutting up scrap autos and farm equipment, Woody would find a home that allowed him to “do a job right” as he had been taught by his parents.
In 1970, “Woody” joined Horowitz Salvage, the same year that Commercial Metals Company (CMC) purchased the yard and included it with the SMI-Texas portion of the business. In time, he became Foreman running the outdoor day to day operations and was usually one for the first people customers dealt with when it came to buying or selling new steel products or used scrap metal materials. Known for his dedication to the philosophy of “eight hours of work for eight hours of pay”, “Woody” and Horowitz Salvage would always be linked together as a part of the SMI-Texas family.
Even before retirement, “Woody” focused on different projects at home. Whether it was working on cars, doing wood or metal work or gardening, he always enjoyed finding ways to stay engaged.
“Woody” was a member of Greater Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Seguin, Texas. In addition to his duties as a Deacon, he also participated in Sunday School teaching, as well as filling in wherever needed and taking on any responsibilities when asked. He was well known in the community and his church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 19th from 4pm to 8pm at Crenshaw Funeral Home Chapel in Seguin. The funeral will be held Saturday, May 20th at 11:00 am at Greater Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Seguin. Interment will follow at the McKeller Cemetery in Gonzales. Crenshaw Funeral Home of Seguin is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife Gladys M. Thomas, of Seguin; and sons Norwood H. Thomas Jr., of Seguin, and Mark F. Thomas of San Antonio. He is also survived by his sisters, Evelyn Ford, of San Antonio, and Ophelia James, of Corpus Christi; and brother, Sammie Thomas, of San Antonio; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, his Greater Pilgrim Rest church family, his Horowitz Salvage/SMI-Texas work family, and lots of other friends many of whom fondly referred to him as “Woody” or “Uncle Bro (Bruh)”.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the charity of one’s choice.

A Tribute
Ladies of a Vintage Era of Lace
Handkerchiefs and Lavender Sachets
A crisp, starched lace handkerchief clasped in the corner of your purse,
Never used to dab your skin; never used to wipe your hands,
But always clasped in the corner of your purse, as a signature of a lady’s style.
Lavender sachets tucked away in your closet and drawers, always with a lingering fragrance, the signature of a lady’s style.
Big, wide hats—not so much to shield the sun but, again, the signature of a lady’s style.
Hands covered in gloves –sometimes with one on and one carried; again, the signature of a lady’s style
Nude or nut brown hose on legs that had been oiled to a beautiful brown glow; again, the signature of a lady’s style.
Lilly Ann, Frost Brothers, and Carl's suits—tastefully tailored in shantung, silk wool, crepe, cinched in the waist; dotted Swiss, Peau de Soie Satin, polished cotton, and flowing organdy dresses; again, the signature of a lady’s style.
And, then there was that walk of confidence; always with your head up and bowing ever so slightly to one you approached, signifying a greeting; again, the signature of a lady’s style.
And, above all carrying a worn and tattered Bible, not because of a lady’s style, but because of your sincere affirmation of your faith in Jesus Christ--never grows old and never goes out of style. (e.s.)

Update on Funeral Services for Alumnus Joe Glen Wilson
May 07, 1938 - July 17, 2021
Obituary
Joe Glen Wilson was born on May 7, 1938 in Seguin, TX to Hurley Wilson, Sr. and Cordelia Ball Wilson. There were nine children born to this union - Grace, Joe, Howard, Otis, Curtis, Fred, Albert, Sherman and Larry. He also had five older siblings - Mary, Faris, Doris, Rosie and Hurley, Jr. A total of 14 siblings all raised together to be a loving and supportive family.
Joe attended Zion Hill Baptist Church and Capote Baptist Church with his family. He accepted Christ at a young age and continued to grow in his Christian journey.
He completed his early education in the Seguin school district. He attended Ball High School where he played and excelled in football and graduated in 1957.
Shortly after graduation, Joe began working in San Antonio, TX and eventually moved to San Diego, CA to live with his sister Rose. Soon after Joe met the love of his life Rubie L. Edmond. On October 3, 1959, Joe and Rubie united in holy matrimony. To this union, two children were born, Michael Keith and Valerie Rachele. Their enduring love lasted 33 years until Rubie's untimely passing in 1992.
In January 1958, Joe began his more than 38-year career of Civil Service. He was first hired as a Janitor with the Navy Resale System. In February 1958, he was promoted to the position of Apprentice Cobbler at Naval Training Center, San Diego and to Cobbler in July 1960. Always seeking for more challenging work duties, he accepted positions as a Warehouse Worker, Receiving Clerk and Accounting Clerk.
Joe had aspirations of becoming a business manager. He continued his education in various college courses and Business Management certificate programs at UCLA Extension and San Diego State University. In 1965, he applied for the Management Trainee Program with NAVRESSO. His first managerial position was the Locker Club Manager at Naval Submarine Base, Point Loma. Through hard work, determination and persistence, he was promoted to Navy Exchange Branch Manager where he was instrumental in numerous improvements from building food service facilities, the Enlisted Men Club, NEX Gas station, bowling alley and the retail store.
In 1975, Joe accepted a new management assignment at OLF Imperial Beach, Navy Exchange. Under his leadership, he spearheaded a total refurbishment of the entire Exchange Complex and built one of the best Commissaries in the San Diego region. In 1988, Joe transferred to Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado where he again initiated and led a total rebuild of the NEX retail store and office spaces.
Throughout his work history, it was always noted that Joe was an outstanding professional, an exemplary leader and showed personal initiative and motivation to achieve any goals set before him. Joe was an award-winning manager receiving several Superior Accomplishment Recognition Awards for outstanding leadership skills, knowledge and performance. He fully retired in May 1996. Joe was known to help many family members obtain employment with the Navy. He would always say, "I'll make the connection, but it's up to you to perform and keep the job.“
Joe and Rubie joined Calvary Baptist Church in 1959 under the leadership of Dr. S.M. Lockridge. In December 1994, he proudly joined New Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of his son, Rev. Michael K. Wilson. He was a dedicated member who served as a Deacon, Chairman of the Deacon Board (2012-2013) and a member of the Brotherhood. Joe found many ways to serve the church. He loved to work in the yard, so he always made sure the landscaping and flowers at the church were just right. He also served by helping several members by maintaining their yards at their homes.
Joe had a special love for outdoor sporting activities. At one time, he enjoyed deep sea fishing. However, his favorite activity was the annual deer-hunting trip to Seguin, TX. Every November, it was a time when many of his brothers, his son, son-in-law and nephews gathered to bond and strategize for the hunt. He was always excited to share a hunting story with anyone that would listen.
Joe was known to be a generous and friendly man. After he retired, he would often be seen working in the yard or creating a project in the garage. Known for sitting in his garage and holding court with his neighbors, many people would drive by, stop and sit and visit with him. Often, he would share knowledge and advice. His booming voice, big smile and giving heart, Joe will be missed tremendously.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Rubie Wilson; son, Rev. Michael K. Wilson and siblings Hurley Jr (Fuzzy), Grace, Fred, Mary, Rosie, and Howard.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Valerie Rachele (Brian) Morris, San Diego, CA; grandchildren Anthony P. "Tonee" (Rhasaan) Sherrill II, Hayward, CA; Andre Rene (Ariel) Wilson, Sacramento, CA; Austin Keith Wilson, Los Angeles, CA; Kendrick O'Brian Morris, Miramar, FL; Valencia Rachele Morris, San Diego, CA and Dominique Patrice Wilson, Nashville, TN; great grandson, Khyri Amor K.
We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the late Johnnie Bean (alumnus of Ball High) in the loss of his grandson John Coleman, Jr.
Services were held July 26, 2021, Meadowlawn; San Antonio, Texas.
Obituary
John Coleman Jr. was born at 9:17am on July 15, 1977 to Debra Coleman and John Coleman Sr. at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
John (affectionately known as Junior) was a loving son, brother, father and friend who gave of himself and always thought of others first.
John completed his education at St. Philip’s College in 1995. John was gainfully employed through security positions to advancing as a night supervisor working at a facility serving the disadvantaged youths.
On December 9th, 2004 John and Brandi Thomas blessed us with the birth of their loving daughter Briyanna J. Coleman, whom he jokingly called Piglet, because as a baby, she would snort like a piggy when she was hungry instead of crying.
John loved being with his family and friends. He loved the SPURS and any emblem with the 210 area code on his clothing or hats. John loved the color Blue. He also loved singing Karaoke Songs and could often be heard performing his favorite song ” I Believe I Can Fly.“
John always had a keen taste for cars and loved good music. His favorite dish was Enchiladas just like his dad John Sr. who preceded him in death in Oct. of 2019.
John leaves to cherish his memory his beloved daughter Briyanna Joann Coleman, his mother Debra Mack, his sister Tambra Coleman ( Frank Savage ), his brother Rashion Coleman, his aunt Patricia Harris ( Carl Harris ), uncle Clifton Bean ( Patty Bean ), two nephews, two goddaughters and a host of other relatives, friends and associates.
John will be sorely missed and will forever live on in our hearts!

Ball High School: An Era to Remember
Marion Grace Fennell Henderson
99 Years of a Life Well Lived
July 1921 – January 2021
Marion Grace Fennell Henderson (affectionately known as Babe), was a graduate of Ball High School in 1939. She was 99 years old and would have reached the “century” mark July 2021. She was an active member of the Lincoln-Ball High Alumni/Ex-Students Association. In fact, she was a member of the organizing committee in 1985 that initiated Ball High reunions, and was the last member of that Committee. The first official Reunion was held in 1986. The school was initially named Lincoln, but in 1925, the school was renamed William Ball (founder in 1871).
Her Business Journey…A year after high school graduation, she began cosmetology/beauty school at Hicks Beauty School in San Antonio. Hicks was the “go-to” beauty school during that time. There, she learned how to care for Black hair and the use of the products (pressing—later perms, curling, croquignole, finger waves, Shirley Temples, page boys , and blue rinsed grey hair). If you’re in your late 60’s and 70+ years older, you’ll understand. It was great anticipation to get “our hair done.” We walked out “looking good.”
She started her business on Court Street near “The Spot”, a tavern with Dorotholia Walker Ruffin; then moved to River and Milam; later, her parents built a shop on the family homestead where she operated her business until she retired in 2003.
Among a group of firsts: Marion was one of the first established
licensed Black beauticians in Seguin: There were Messrs.: Florence Boyce, Jim Hardeman, Alberta McKnight (Shug), McIntyre, King, Mable Cubitt, Eunice Crenshaw, Maxine Williams Mulkey, Gladys Francis, Mable McKinney, MaudeEster Armstrong, and Spears Shop. The Lincoln-Ball High School organization recognized and paid tribute to the trailblazing beauticians and barbers at the 2014 Reunion. They touched many lives through their professional work and their community participation.
In her 99 years, she saw much history and was a part of this history. She witnessed the election of 19 presidents: from Warren G. Harding to the current president Joseph Biden. Of the 19 elected presidents was the historical election of the first Black President Barrack Obama and the first Black Vice President, Kamala Harris.
It wasn’t easy during the period of the existence of Lincoln-Ball High School, which closed in 1966. The school existed because of segregation and unequal distribution of support, but we had teachers who believed in us and emphasized and “preached that achievement and accomplishment were within our grasps”. Yes, an era has gone, but the memories sustain, and the Legacy will continue!

How dear to our hearts are the days at ‘ol Ball High School; our own Alma Mater, keep us forever dear. Her memories so precious, grown year after year; time never shall sever, friends of purple and gold.”(Composed and written by Rosie Richards Morris)
Funeral services scheduled for Wednesday, February 10, 11 a.m., Second Baptist Church, Seguin, Rev. Jimmie Flakes, Pastor. Burial will follow Thursday, February 11, 11:30 a.m., Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Elizabeth was born December 29, 1945 to Prince K. Brown and Lillian Johnson in Seguin, Texas. She graduated from Ball high school in 1964. She then attended St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas and earned a degree in Education. As a woman of faith, she gave her life to Christ and was baptized at the age of six. She attended the Wesley Harper United Methodist Church where she served as usher and in the choir. She was married and resided in San Antonio, with her former husband, Lawrence Johnson Sr. in 1973 where they raised their two children.
Elizabeth’s life on earth leaves a sweet fragrance and will be remembered for many sentimental reasons and acts of kindness. She believed in giving back to the community and committed numerous hours to working with children and motivating and empower her family and many young adults. Elizabeth was one of the first African Americans hired to work as an Operator for Southwestern Bell. She was later promoted to an executive position with Southwestern Bell and AT&T as the lead for Testing and Evaluations of new employees. For years she was a strong advocate for voting and committed herself to working elections and driving citizens to the election polls. Her most favored accomplishment was her career move after her retirement from AT&T was working in San Antonio Independent School District at Edgar Allan Poe middle School where she started as a substitute teacher but retiring as a Teacher. She loved and cherished the work and opportunity to make a difference with the students at Poe Middle School.
Domestically, Elizabeth enjoyed eating soul food dishes like greens, cornbread, and macaroni and cheese. She was also known to enjoy cheese enchiladas, carrot cake and German chocolate cake. Her legacy of community activism and service will live on in the many she extended kindness, wisdom, and love.
Above all, Elizabeth love for her family shown bright as she devoted herself to providing a good life to her daughter, Sherrilynne and son, Lawrence as well as tender loving care to her grandmother “Nanny” and mother “Lil”. She took pride in supporting their school activities and even served as the President of Sam Houston High School Band Booster Club, She showed the same support to her granddaughters, Jasmine and Jada who lovingly called her “Nana” and enjoyed watching Barney, Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel with her. Nana also enjoyed traveling with her children and grandchildren to destinations and cities like, Hawaii, North Carolina, Walt Disney World and New York.
She leaves to celebrate her life: Sherrilynne Cherry (daughter) and Lawrence Johnson, Jr (son) of San Antonio; sisters Diane Broadnax (deceased Gerald) of Seguin, TX, Maude Johnson Lee of San Antonio, TX, Cheryl Johnson of San Antonio, TX, brothers Thomas Johnson (Young) of Killeen, TX and Fredrick Johnson of Seguin, TX; sister-in-law Gloria Thomas (deceased James); two granddaughters Jasmine Cherry of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Jada Cherry of San Antonio, TX and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, and Grandmother Elizabeth is preceded in death by her brother, James Thomas, sister, Cornelia P. Holland and youngest brother, Lee Grady Johnson.

Obituary: DEACON JESSE TURNER
Deacon Jesse Turner was born February 1, 1938 in Seguin Texas. He was the oldest son born to the union of Elder Knolle and Mother Rosia Turner who preceded him in death.
Deacon Jesse Turner accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and never failed to witness and testify of God's goodness. He along with his wife, Missionary Nancy Turner, children and grandchildren were faithful members of the Antioch Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in San Marcos, Texas.
Not long after high school, Deacon Turner served his country by enlisting in the US Army and became a marksman. He later met and married his Nan (Missionary Nancy Turner) also known as his 'little woman'. He prided himself on taking care of his family. He was a great husband, a great father and a great friend to those who knew him. He was a man known for telling it like it is and never sugar coated anything. He was a people person and loved to talk.
Deacon Turner wore many hats and was gifted with many talents. He owned and operated Astro Construction company and JNT Construction company. Produced movies through his production company; Jess Turner Productions and hosted his own talk show, Jess Turner Talk Show which is and will continue to air on Spectrum TV. He founded the Elite Golf Association and successfully made it possible for over 176 individuals to travel to Hawaii twice. He founded Elite Youth Services and taught at risk youth the game of golf through free golf lessons. His slogan 'We may never have a drug free city, but we can work on having drug free kids'
However, the highlight of his life began when he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Deacon Jesse Turner served faithfully and tirelessly before the Lord. Everywhere he went whether it was at Costco, HEB, Red Lobster, Longhorn Steakhouse or within his neighborhood, Deacon Turner shared his testimony and warned people to get right because you don't want to end up on the dark/black side (Hell). He often would say 'Lord, help us to serve you the right way' and 'Don't let us die and go to hell'. Deacon Jesse Turner was passionate about his walk with God and it reflected through the life he lived.

KATHERINE MC KINNEY CORLEY
November 26, 1945 ~ April 17, 2020 (age 74)
Obituary
Katherine (McKinney) Corley was born on November 26, 1945 to the union of Fred and Virda McKinney in Seguin, Texas. Fred and Virda McKinney had eight children, four boys and four girls. Katherine was the seventh child and youngest girl born to the union of Fred and Virda McKinney. Katherine was affectionately known as "Tuttie Pie" by all of her family and friends. A name that was sassy and fitting for her outgoing and unforgettable personality-if you met her, you would not forget her.
Katherine accepted Christ at the early age of 17 at the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church and remained a lover and follower of Christ until her death. At the time of her death, Katherine was a member of Second Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas. She was an active member of the usher board and often volunteered in other capacities at the church, until her health began to fail as a result of Cancer. Katherine was often referred to as her pastor's, Rev. Dr. Robert Jemerson, Seniors., "Amen Partner," as she was often heard praising God's message as Pastor Jemerson delivered the message on Sunday mornings.
Katherine attended Lincoln Ball High School where she made many long-lasting friends. Katherine was active at Ball High participating in basketball and dancing as a majorette in the school's band. Katherine was known for "carrying" her baton everywhere she went.
Katherine left Seguin and moved to Los Angeles, California with her brothers at the age of 18. After residing in Los Angeles for many years, she returned home to Seguin and ultimately planted her roots in San Antonio, Texas, where she resided until her death.
Katherine gave birth to two loving daughters, Donna Yvette Turner and Letitia Delvon Quinones, both of Houston, Texas. Donna had one son, Wayne Jerome Turner, JR. and Letitia had two daughters, Elyssa Danielle Blanks and Lauren Paige Barrett. Anyone who knew Katherine knew there was nothing she loved more than her girls. This fact reigned true until her grandchildren were born — Katherine ADORED her grandchildren. Katherine's grandchildren were the love of her life and every moment she breathed — she breathed for them. Her days were spent keeping up with them no matter where they were and offering them wisdom and advice that they will keep with them forever.
Education was extremely important to Katherine. She spoke success into her children at a very young age. Her life's mission was to see her children receive a college education and her mission was accomplished. Donna, her oldest daughter, graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Master's Degree. Letitia graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a Bachelor's Degree and Texas Southern University with a Juris Doctorate Degree and went on to become an attorney at Katherine's urging and relentless motivation. Katherine also demanded the same from her grandchildren — she wanted nothing more than for them to obtain a college education, and they did so. Wayne graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and Elyssa graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor's Degree in Drama. Up until her death, Katherine motivated Lauren to follow in her family's footsteps - which we know she will do to honor her "Grandma."
In 1988, Katherine met her lasting love and husband, Chester O. Corley. Katherine and Chester remained together for 32 years and loved traveling together and going out to eat. Chester remained at her side during her illness and was a constant supporter of her as Cancer took its toll. It is an undisputed fact that Chester saw to it that all her dreams came true.
Katherine (loved, loved, loved) to shop. If shopping was a sport, Katherine would be an "ALL STAR." She also loved going out to eat, and often asked only for restaurant gift cards, for her birthday, Mother's Day and Christmas, which her children gladly obliged. When she wasn't shopping, eating out with her bestie, Annie Ussery, she was volunteering at Brook Army Medical Center and did so until her health began to fail. Katherine also loved spending time with her family, congregating with her sisters and brothers - as they were very close.
The Lord called Katherine home to glory in the home of her daughter on April 17, 2020. Donna, Letitia and her niece, Wanda E. Nichols, were by her side as she transcended into heaven.
Katherine was preceded in death by her father, Fred McKinney Sr., her mother, Virda McKinney, her brothers, Fred McKinney Jr. and Lee McKinney, her three sisters, Mamie Richardson, Pearlie Fennell, and Marjorie Nichols and her nephew, Costell Boston.
Katherine leaves to mourn in her passing, her husband, Chester O. Corley, her two daughters, Donna Y. Turner and Letitia D. Quinones, her three grandchildren, Wayne J. Turner, Elyssa D. Blanks and Lauren P. Barrett, her two brothers, Willie (Mona) D. McKinney and Shelton (Nancy) McKinney, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, whom she loved

Ann leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, two sisters, Rose Lee Palmer {Toothie} of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Lena Mae Rivers of San Antonio,Texas; her daughter Shena Alexander and son in law Keelyn Alexander and god son Zarin Turner; granddaughters Latoya Day (Byron), Lashawnda Pollard and Takisha Ballard;great grand children Aniah Williams, Christal Williams, Jazelle Williams, Selaya Jarmon, Jordyn and Jaydyn Citty and Tahfari Ade; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Obituary
The Legacy of Willie Morris…
Born January 10, 1928 in Seguin, Texas (Guadalupe County), to Willie T. Bean, Sr. and Estelle Terrell Freeman Bean the third youngest child of two older sisters. He accepted Christ as a child at Second Baptist Church in Seguin. He attended Lizzie M. Burgess Elementary and Ball Middle & High School where he graduated in 1945 under Principal, W.M. Ellison. He was affectionately known as “Hambone” in his hometown.
As a young man finding his way in life, he obtained a job as a truck driver with C.W. Traeger Company in 1945; and then a train porter for S.P. Railroad from 1948-1950. He was then drafted to serve in the United States Army (1950-1952) in combat with the 1st Calvary, 7th Regiment in Korea 13 ½ months. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal and served 4 years inactive reserve.
Willie moved to San Antonio, Texas to live with his older sister Naomi R. Wade. While attending St. Phillips College from 1956-1958 majoring in Industrial Education and Tailoring, he met the love of his life, Leathia Mae Amos, who lived next door with her sister, Henrietta E. Gantt. She swept Willie off his feet in 8 months with her pretty little self. They would wed on September 8, 1956 in Weimar, Texas by Rev. A.M. Simmons. In 1968, they were the first black couple to move in their home on Jarbet in Eastwood Village a predominately white neighborhood, where they raised their children, Anthony and Stacie. For months they endured hate through rude phone calls, writing in the driveway and on their home. And through it all they stood strong and shared a very loving life together for over 62 years. Just as he was dedicated to his wife and family, he was dedicated to his church, Greater Mount Olive B.C. He joined in 1958 under the late Rev. J.N. Byrd. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1987 by Rev. A.W. Cole where he served faithfully for 60 years.
Willie as a man, began working for Lackland AFB for 7 years in the motor pool and then transferred to Kelly AFB. He would retire after 38 years of service as a Civil Service Transportation Supervisor Section Chief in Air Craft Refueling. During his tenure he oversaw the service of the Columbia Shuttle Piggyback 747 Aircraft and the Endeavor Piggyback 747 Aircraft. Willie could never sit still enough after retiring. He went on to retire a second time after working 10 years with the City of San Antonio VIA Transportation. He received several safety awards and retired under the 5200 Club which he was one of the first to retire under. He then retired yet again for a third time from East Central ISD as a Bus Driver for another 10 ½ years accident free. He was never afraid to work.
Willie continued to dedicate himself to work about in the neighborhood; starting the first Neighborhood Association with his longtime friend, Henry Gallon.
On January 13th, his lord and savior called him home, because his work had been done. He has been the strong hold of the Bean household, a true example of what a Father and Grandfather represents, a person who never met a stranger and loyal church member and Deacon of Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church. As we celebrate his life today, let us all remember the impact he had on all of our lives.
Preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Estelle Bean; sisters, Naomi R. Wade and Emma L. McClain.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Leathia Mae Bean; son, Anthony Bernard Bean (Marty); daughter, Stacie Estelle Bean. Grandchildren, Jasmin Nicole Acosta and Leathia Marie Bean. Great Grandchildren, Aiden, Zuri and Zoe.
OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY IS EXTENDED TO THE PETTIT FAMILY,(MICHAEL AND DELORES) IN THE LOSS OF LINDA PETTIT, WHO WAS A PART OF THE LEGACY OF BALL HIGH SCHOOL. WE WILL REMEMBER HER IN THE WORDS OF OUR ALMA MATER:
"WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER FRIENDS OF PURPLE AND GOLD."
"WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER FRIENDS OF PURPLE AND GOLD."

“
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1
A Time to be Born
On July 14, 1950, in San Bernardino, California God blessed the late Leon and Mertie Jackson-Gaddis with their second lovely and beautiful daughter. She was named Carolyn Yvonne Gaddis and brought much joy to this union. She was affectionately called “Sudie” by friends, relatives and loved ones throughout the years.
A Time to Plant
Sudie’s Christian relationship (spiritual and eternal journey) began at the age of 12 where she confessed her belief in Christ and decided to make Jesus her choice. She was baptized by Rev. A. J. Malone in Seguin, Texas. She worked in different capacities and served faithfully from childhood until adulthood in various church ministries and training programs at the St. James Missionary Baptist Church.
A Time to Build Up
Sudie received her formal education and was a product of the Seguin’s Public Schools, and was one of the first to continue her education at the integrated high school, graduating from Seguin High. She matriculated her education at St. Phillip’s College where she pursued a career in Nursing. She had the distinct honor of caring for Mrs. Bowden, the founder of St. Phillips’ College during her hospital stay. Her first working job was at Deiroff’s Food Store as a Checker and Accountant. She worked for the San Antonio School District as a teaching assistant for a number of years. Sudie then worked as a Book-keeper for Centro’s Food Stores. She then pursued a career with San Antonio Municipal Court System as a Data Entry Supervisor. She had a beautiful and rewarding life in the field of serving the city and community. She completed her illustrious career as a genuine friend, advisor, motivator, supervisor, role model, godmother, sister, mother, and wife.
A Time to Love
In 1971, she married Cornelius “Neil” Mathis in Seguin, Texas at St. James Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. A. J. Malone, Sr. To this union two lovely, intelligent, caring and dedicated children were born: Cornelius “Bubba” and Camellia “Meia” Mathis.
Sudie united with New Light Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. P. S. Wilkinson when she moved to San Antonio. She later moved her membership and became a charter member of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church in 1997 under the pastorship of Rev. Dr. Paul D. Stevens, Sr., where she continued to work on her soul salvation. She served as a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, President of the Ministers’, Deacons’ and Trustees’ Wives Ministry for a number of years, and was a member of the Sisters in the Spirit Ministry. One of her special projects and greatest pleasure while at New Covenant was seeing to the Lord’s Supper and Baptism preparation on the first Sunday of each month. One of her favorite songs was “Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee, No Other Help I Know.”In sickness and in health Sudie’s demeanor was strong willed, outspoken, and opinionated, but with dignity. She always had a contagious smile along with a kind spirit to all who greeted her.
A Time To Die “It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him.”
II Timothy 2:11
Answering the Master’s call, Sudie transitioned from her earthly house to the mansion prepared for her by our Heavenly Father on September 10, 2017 to be with her Lord and Savior, parents Leon and Mertie-Jackson Gaddis, relatives and friends.
A Time to Mourn
In transitioning earth to glory, Carolyn “Sudie” leaves many cherish and wonderful memories and a well lived life to her devoted children in Houston, Texas, son Cornelius ‘Bubba” (Ebonee); daughter Camellia “Meia”, Lovely Sister Nancy (Shelton “Mike”); Gaddis-McKinney, brothers Leon, Jr. “Bubba,” Willie “Bucky” Gaddis, sister Linda Rodgers, aunts, cousins from Louisiana and California. A special cousin Clara Jackson Sheffield. Sudie’s BBF “Best Friend Forever, Althea Wilson-Thomas”, other extended family members; and a host of friends who are grateful to God for the years she shared with us. It can truly be said, “She fought a good fight, she finished her course and she kept the faith.”

Resolution
LINCOLN BALL HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI/EX-STUDENTS ASSOCIATION
A RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY AND RESPECT IN MEMORY OF
FREDDIE LEE CORLEY
When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
WHEREAS, we the members of the Lincoln-Ball School Alumni & Ex-Student’s Association, desire to place on record our love and esteem for Freddie lee corley. We must now accept the Christian submissions to God’s will His calling our brother home.
WHEREAS, we will remember him as a graduate of the class of 1965 from our Legacy Lincoln-Ball High School. His attendance was a part of a history that began in 1871.
WHEREAS, all of us remember him as a valiant military soldier who fought for these United States of America. We remember him as one who paid a high price and sacrificed for us while in the military. He, like many others, who sacrificed and suffered during the war, deserved our utmost respect and prayers. We salute him for his service! Our prayers were continuous for his healing.
WHEREAS, we reach out to his family with sincerest sympathy and offer consolation through our prayers to his two sons Freddie Leon Corley and Steven Gerard Corley; one sister, Bernice Redix; two brothers, Jesse Ray Miller and Grover Miller, Jr., and the many other relatives of his family. May the memories provide comfort and solace in this time of bereavement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we will always remember him in the eloquent words of our Alma Mater:
How well I remember friends of purple and gold; friends met in September, pledging their faith to hold; Gone are friends of September, gone dear friends of old, time never shall sever friends of purple and gold.; How dear to our hearts are the days at ’ol Ball High School; our Own Alma Mater, keep us forever dear. Her memories so precious, grown year after year; time never shall sever, friends of purple and gold.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, God has spoken: Thy Will be Done! The burdens that seemed too heavy to bear are lifted away on the wings of a prayer.
